For those that don't know, a baby monitor is a device used to monitor your baby when they are in a different room to you, usually in bed asleep (hopefully!). So you know when they are awake, usually crying and in need of attention. Baby monitors have evolved with technology over the years, with two main types currently available, video monitors and audio monitors.
Video baby monitors are fairly new, using video footage to keep your eye on your baby. It actually uses the same technology used in webcams. The transmitter contains a microphone along with the camera, the receiver has an LCD screen with a speaker. With a video monitor installed in your baby's room, you can actually set it up so that you can see the picture from anywhere. You just need two computers with Internet access at both ends and you've got an instant video feed directly from your baby's room. So if Dad is working late he can still see his little angel when she goes to bed!
The standard baby monitor is the audio only version, based on older monitors. However, new technology has made some improvements. For example, you can obviously hear your baby, but now you can also actually talk back to them. Some monitors even allow you to send commands to the baby's device, allowing you to play music to help your baby back to sleep.
Whichever type of baby monitor you choose, you also have the option to go wireless. These baby monitors are usually more convenient than the old style wired version, allowing you to take your receiver anywhere, as long as both devices are within range. So enjoy the sunshine in your garden while your baby sleeps. The one downside to the wireless device is that they tend to be more affected by interference.
